Food Grade Poly Pouches

Plastic Food Grad Poly Bags & Pouches

Food poly pouches are specifically designed for safely storing and transporting various types of food. Unlike regular plastic bags, food grade poly pouches are made from plastics that will not leach chemicals into foods or beverages. Thus keeping the food safe.

In order to be considered food grade, food packaging bags need to be made from materials that are FDA approved for direct food contact. The most common plastics used are polyethene (PE) and polypropylene (PP). These plastics are non-toxic, odorless, and chemically stable.

4 Common Uses of Food Poly Pouches

Food Poly Pouches Offer Users with Great Versatility

Food grade plastic poly pouches and bags have many important uses, especially in the food industry. Here are some of the main ways these bags are utilized.

1) Food Storage & Transportation

The number one reason to turn to food poly bags is for safely storing and transporting food. Restaurants, grocery stores, and food manufacturers rely on these bags and pouches to keep ingredients and products fresh during shipping and storage. Plastic bags and pouches create an airtight seal that locks in freshness and prevents contamination. Ensuring the product tastes the best once it reaches the consumer’s hand.

2) Freezing Food

Food grade plastic poly bags and pouches are ideal for freezing food. They are durable enough to withstand extremely cold temperatures without becoming brittle. The airtight seal on these bags and pouches also prevents freezer burn by blocking exposure to oxygen.

How Food Grade Poly Pouches Are Made

To ensure food grade poly pouches are safe for food storage and handling, they go through a rigorous manufacturing process.

The first step is selecting materials that meet strict FDA regulations for food contact. Only plastics specifically approved for food use are allowed, which includes polyethylene (PE) pellets.

The next step is when the material is heated and extruded into a molten tube, which is blown into a bubble. This bubble is squeezed and rolled into plastic sheeting. During the extrusion, there is the addition of additives like anti-static agents and UV inhibitors. These additives are utilized to improve the functionality and shelf life of the bags. And of course, these additives are also FDA approved.

Next, the plastic sheeting is then printed, cut, and sealed into bags of various sizes. Throughout the conversion process, the bags go through multiple quality checks to make sure there are no tears, holes, or other defects before being packaged for sale.

In order to maintain food safety, the entire manufacturing process is carefully controlled and monitored. All of the equipment and surfaces are sterilized on a daily basis and workers follow strict hygiene protocols. Factories that produce food grade poly pouches are also subject to frequent audits and inspections. Further ensuring all FDA codes are being upheld.

By following rigorous standards and practices, food grade poly pouches can be safely used to store, transport and preserve a variety of foods. When used properly and according to guidelines, these standards help reduce food waste and support a sustainable food supply chain.

What Makes a Plastic Bag Food Grade?

Proper Thickness Prevents Leaks and Spills

Food grade plastic bags must be durable enough to hold food safely without the risk of punctures, tears, or leaks. The thickness of the bag—measured in mils—varies depending on its intended use and the type of food being stored. For instance, bags designed for produce and meats are usually thicker than those used for dry goods. The material and seams must also be strong enough to support the weight of the food and handle any moisture it may contain.

Food-Grade Plastic Must Be Chemically Inert

For a plastic bag to be considered food grade, it must be manufactured from materials that will not release harmful chemicals into food. The most commonly used materials are polyethylene (PE) and polypropylene (PP). These plastics are chemically stable, meaning they do not react with or transfer substances to the foods they come into contact with.

Other types of plastic, such as PVC, may contain additives like plasticizers and stabilizers that can migrate into food. Because of this potential contamination, they are generally not considered safe for food-contact applications.

Food Poly Pouches Must Be Specifically Designed and Tested for Food Contact

Food grade plastic bags are manufactured using plastics and additives that are approved for direct contact with food. These bags are carefully tested to ensure they meet strict food safety standards and that no harmful chemicals migrate into the food.

In some cases, additional testing is conducted to confirm the bags are suitable for specific types of foods, such as those that are high in fat, moisture, or acidity. If a bag is not clearly labeled as “food grade” or “food safe,” it likely has not undergone this testing and should not be used for food storage or packaging.
